Nomenclature

Artist - Shows the method by which the artist is identified.

Artist, Unidentified - The Artist could not be identified.

Art Mount - A calendar composed of one stiff textured or smooth board with a print tipped on or fastened on to the back and a pad tipped on. Usually has attractive borders printed around edges of calendar and to frame print. Older calendars may have a pad flap secured by a cord. Imprint usually between print and pad. Has a hole or eyelet at the top for hanging.

Commercial - A calendar with full size lighter weight backing sheet and stapled or tipped large pad usually taking up bottom half of item. Large imprint with commercial message in lieu of print taking up the top half. No print. Largest sizes may be tinned at top.

DeLuxe - A two sheet calendar composed of two pieces of stiff board. The back board is solid and a print is tipped on or fastened on to the back. The top board can be embossed and has a die cut window to display the print and a pasted on pad. The following special features will be noted in the remarks for the item. Some DeLuxe calendars have a die cut flap to display the pad by lifting the flap. A cord usually secures the pad flap. A positive slogan or motto is usually printed on the pad flap. A cord may be affixed at the top for hanging. Some Deluxe calendars have ribbons instead of cords.

Drop Pocket - A calendar with pockets (envelopes) forming the lower part of the calendar. Used for sorting and storing time dated papers or notations.

Easel Back - An easel backed calendar for displaying a print. May be 4 or less piece construction with irregular die cut back. May have ribbon on top. Print tipped on stiff top sheet. Pad tipped on intermediate sheet and easel formed from back sheet. Some have separate easel glued to back sheet rather than formed from back sheet. May have YAAG Calendar printed on back. "Remarks" column will describe.

Folded, 2 Fold - 2 folds in the heavy weight back sheet. The top cover with print tipped on folds open to show a stitched insert of 8 to 12 pages with topical information. Larger pad may be tipped or stapled. Back cover may have message/information. On some items the stitched pad is absent and specific information is printed inside.

Folded, 1 Fold - 1 fold in the heavy weight back sheet with print tipped. Folds closed. Larger pad may be tipped or stapled. No insert.

No or # Soft or # Hard Folds - Show number of folds in larger calendars. Type of folds are Soft, which processing determined can be removed by pressing, and Hard. Hard folds were determined to be non-removable or the paper was cracked along the fold. Folds are usually not across the print except for the very largest sizes.

Hang Down - A calendar with the pad hanging down below from the art work.

Hanger - Hanger style. One sheet construction with separate pad fastened. Earlier versions not tinned. Borders usually printed around calendar and to frame print. Print printed on calendar, not tipped. Some later versions may have a hanger tab glued to top of back. Some late versions are tinned, list will indicate if tinned. List will indicate if the larger sizes were soft folded for sample storage purposes. Only the very large sizes were soft folded across print.

12 Sheet Hanger - Hanger style. 12 sheet tinned construction with a print and a pad on each sheet. Some later versions may have a hanger tab glued to top of back. List will indicate if the larger sizes were soft folded for sample storage purposes. Only the very large sizes were soft folded across print.

Imprint - The following codes show the type of imprint when the item is imprinted:

Incomplete (w/Calendar Type) - Used as a prefix with any of the Calendar Types to denote an incomplete calendar, i.e an item in a calendar format with a print but without a pad and without an imprint.

Novelty - A unique calendar described in the Remarks for the item.

Pad, Complete - The Calendar Pad Month shows the month of the top pad leaf. The Year shows the year of the pad. The following codes show the type of pad:

Print - A calendar print by itself used for mounting on or in a calendar. Most all of the separate prints are in vignette format, i.e. no borders.

Size - Our size convention shows sizes as: 9 x 12 = meaning the item is 9" horizontal (wide) and 12" vertical (height), otherwise know as portrait format or 12 x 9 = meaning the item is 12" horizontal (wide) and 9" vertical (height), otherwise know as landscape format.The following describe the sizes of the item components:

Title - Shows the method by which the title of the item is identified:

Year - The year of the calendar use according to the year printed on the pad. Identical items without a dated pad are combined and shown in the year of first use. If no pad, the year has been obtained from the archival U.O. Colson dating system.


Condition of Calendars and Prints -

Our offerings are from our own inventory stock of unused and uncirculated production samples. See our "Authenticity" page.

All items are new and uncirculated and were stored in our archives for up to the past 70 years until inventoried for this offering. Please allow for some very minor corner creases or edge tears which will be "matted out" when displayed. Any deviation from new - uncirculated condition is noted on the listing. When the words "Condition New" are shown in the listing you can be assured your calendar and/or print will be in the finest sample condition.

Any item offered by us which was not manufactured and stored by us for sample purposes will be so noted on the listing and its condition fully explained.

Appearance of Calendars and Prints -

The appearance of the items are outstanding because of the archival storage conditions the ageing of the paper has been minimized and the printed colors remain vivid, not faded and in original condition. The items up to about 1938 were printed in up to eight separate colors using etched stone or etched glass plate image lithography. The items from about 1938 were printed in up to six colors using a variety of film image lithography.
